Exercise 8.2

Faculty Death

Last year’s “Outstanding Professor” at Liberty University died at age 58. Elizabeth Billson taught at the school for 36 years. It has been estimated that the education professor had taught 10,000 future teachers during her career. Billson has been suffering from cancer for 10 years now.

Wreck

Sunday night, two trucks collided on a part of I-59 undergoing construction. There are two narrow lanes where the trucks collided head on. Both drivers are unhurt, but have been cited for speeding and reckless driving. Each of the drivers braked, but continued to slide forward and hit each other. The accident caused a traffic jam because fuel from both trucks spilled onto the highway and cause an oil slick which blocked the road for 45 minutes.  One of the trucks was refrigerated, and lost an estimated of $10,000 worth or products due to everything thawing.

Bridge Completed

Last year during the flood, the bridge over Roaring Creek was washed out. At the time, the bridge was  75 years old, but served a great purpose. When the bridge was passable, the people of Oak Grove only had to travel a mile to Highway 19. However, with the bridge out, the residents had to travel a lot farther to get to work.

The county has been working on getting it fixed for some time now, and the bridge has actually been open for a couple of weeks. The bridge cost seven hundred thousand dollars to replace. The cost was split up between the county, the state, and the U.S. department of transportation.

We have a quote from Roland Lively, the department head of the County Department of Transportation. (Insert sound byte)

"The bridge was not in great shape when it was destroyed. We already had some money in the county budget for repairs. Problem was, we didn't have enough to replace the bridge. We were just going to to repair it. Fortunately, some state and federal money was available, and we were able to do it a lot quicker than we had expected."

The new bridge spans 33 feet over Roaring Creek along Roaring Creek Road, and the town is excited to see it back.

Blogger critique

A previous youth leader of mine, Emily, along with her husband and two children moved to Haiti this past August. Emily has a blog that she posts on pretty regularly, to let all of her friends and family back in New Jersey know what is going on. Emily's youngest child, Haylie, decided to start blogging just about a month ago. Although she has only posted twice, I feel that they are great blogs for a girl her age.

The first thing you see when you navigate to Haylie’s blog is the theme. It is orange with pink and yellow swirls, making you think of a young girl. One of my favorite things about Haylie’s blog is the amount of pictures. They really help me see how much she truly loves being in Haiti. Although her blogs are extremely descriptive and paint pictures in my mind, the actual pictures are great conformation.

Haylie has one extreme downside to her blogging life, and I think it is her age. Although she loves to write, and a lot of people really enjoy reading what she has to say, she doesn’t have much experience. When it comes to organization in her blog posts, there pretty much isn’t any. She’ll talk about something, post a picture, and then change subject. I understand that she doesn’t have much time and wants to just let everyone back home know how she’s doing, she is a bit sporadic in topics, and gets distracting.

Sadly, since her and her family are missionaries in Haiti, they don’t have much time, or internet service. Haylie has had her blog for about a month, and has posted twice. However, she remains faithful and keeps everyone up to date with things going on in her life.

Truck driver and one other injured in 11 car pileup.

  • twenty-five people injured in 11 car pileup

Live poultry on the road after 11 car pile up.

Twenty-five people were injured due to an 11 car pileup caused by the driver of a semi-truck that was carrying chickens, at the corner of McFarland Boulevard and 15th Tuesday evening.

While driving to one of the company’s new farms near Gadsden around 6 p.m., the semi-truck made an illegal left hand turn. Sergeant John Jones reported that the chicken truck driver, who got hurt, was a 45-year-old man from Alberta City named Jeff Johnson. He was transported to DCH by ambulance because he had bruises and a possible broken ankle.

There were as many as 300 chickens in the truck at the time of the accident. The truck turned on it’s side while making a sharp turn, killing at least 30 and trapping others in the vehicle until firemen arrived. As many as 40 chickens still remain at large.
The animals are property of the chicken company, Alabama Poultry Incorporated, and should be returned if found. The chicken company president Carlton Fitzsimmons reports the dead and missing chickens are worth over $700. Each chicken was insured for $10.
Sarah Bernell, a 63-year-old retired local kindergarten teacher was also injured and taken to the hospital. Her nephew, Mike Kenyon, was driving the car. Clarence DiMotta, the hospital spokesperson, reports that Bernell has a slight concussion, and is in good condition.
The only other injuries to the 23 other cars were bruises. The damages to the cars involved were minor.
“It was the biggest pile-up I’ve ever seen. Lots and lots of smashed bumpers but the worst part was the screams of the chickens. Those things make a lot of noise, you know,” said Jones.
